We met with Iris, a student on our Supported Learning programme to raise awareness about this day and the change she would like to see in a post-covid era.
Iris likes to attend a variety of social activities in her community, she loves swimming, going to the gym, cinema and theatre. When she finishes her internship programme, she would love to attend drama school and we’ll be sure to support her towards her dream!
Iris says: “I would like to get a job after I finish college, but there are very few jobs or work experience available.
It's important for students, no matter their ability level, to be given a chance to gain experience in the working world which is why students on our supported learning programme are able to gain work experience at our RECO shop. They are able to improve their social skills, customer service skills, money management and more.
We asked what changes she would like to see as a person with disabilities. Iris says:
“I would like to see more opportunities for paid jobs as I would like to get a job when I leave college.
I would like to see more social activities in my community and support to access activities.
I would like to see more travel training for young people with disabilities when at college and after leaving college.
I would like the council to get rid of the 25-year age rule, so that I can have access to further education or training”.
Please help us share Iris’s story so that we can raise more awareness and support for people with disabilities outside of the college.
